Tuesday 8th March 2022 marked a momentous occasion for the town of Congleton , not only was it International Womens Day but it also saw the unveiling of a statue of Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy who was an activist who fought tirelessly for equality throughout her life.

Working along side Emmeline Pankhurst in the suffragette movement , Elizabeth worked tirelessly for girls’ education, for women’s right to own property and for their right to vote.

The statue is a fantastic addition to Congleton Town Centre and is a well deserved symbol of recognition for a much loved historical figure of the town
