Making sure you dont have a burst during the winter

During the last couple of years Britain has experienced very low temperatures during the winter months. For that reason it is a very wise precaution to take further steps in ensuring that the heating system is working correctly to avoid the catastrophe of burst pipes.

If you are planning to leave your property empty for more than a day or so it is worth following this advice

  • Turn off the main stop tap (where the water enters the property)
  • Run the kitchen cold tap until it runs dry (this drains the main feed to the house)
  • Set your heating time clock to constant so that the heating can fire up if the temperature drops
  • Set the house thermostat between 10 & 12 degrees & open all radiators fully or set the radiators to the frost setting if they have individual thermostats
  • Wedge open the loft hatch a couple of centimetres to allow some heat through to help keep the pipes from freezing

If you own a rental property make sure your tenants are aware of this. If you have a card meter for either the electricity or gas make sure it has plenty of credit. If your electricity or gas runs out then the boiler wont work and the pipes may burst.
